Terrence continues to talk about Janet, and Lila spaces out and then apologizes. Nettie comes over and tells Lila about how Derek tried to run his scam with the health inspector on them, but they paid the fine and hired Nettie’s brother instead of the contractor Derek demanded they use. George, Nettie’s husband and co-owner, won’t come say hello because he associates Lila with Derek. When Nettie leaves, Terrence asks why Adeena wasn’t at the wake. Lila fills him in about their conflicts: Lila crushing on Amir and Adeena wanting to open a cafe in Shady Palms. Terrence suggests that Lila ask Adeena why she decided to settle down in Shady Palms.
Lila goes over to see Derek’s mother, and the house brings back memories. The idea of staying in Shady Palms makes Lila feel “like death.” Lila thinks Mrs. Long isn’t home and starts to leave but then runs into her outside the house. During their visit, Lila shares ube cookies with Mrs. Long, which she enjoys. They talk about Mr. Long and Lola Flor keeping the thermostat low, as well as Tita Rosie’s hospitality. When Mrs. Long goes into the kitchen to make coffee and doesn’t come back, Lila goes to see what happened only to find Mr.
