Background

Literary Context: The Kingdom of the Wicked Series

Though a standalone novel, Throne of the Fallen builds the existing universe in Maniscalco’s fantasy romance series Kingdom of the Wicked. The first novel of the series, Kingdom of the Wicked (2020), follows two young witches, Emilia and Vittoria di Carlo, who grow up hearing horror stories about the Wicked, seven immortal demon brothers who rule over their own circles of Hell. The brothers are held there by La Prima, the First Witch, after the king of Hell fell in love with her daughter.

When Vittoria is murdered, Emilia mistakenly summons Wrath, one of the Wicked, through a marriage bond. Emilia and Wrath form an alliance, and with his help, she uncovers the witches’ ancient feud with demons and a prophecy stating that she and Vittoria must stop the gates of Hell from opening or the world will end. They also discover that before she died, Vittoria had decided to marry Pride, the leader of the Wicked, to stop the prophecy. Emilia nearly dies from a demon attack, but Wrath saves her by marking her. Despite her feelings for Wrath, Emilia marries the king of Hell to safeguard the world.

The next two novels, Kingdom of the Cursed (2021) and Kingdom of the Feared (2022), detail Emilia’s journey to discovering her and Vittoria’s true identities as the Goddesses of Fury and Death.
